MD Systems traces its origins to 1979, when John McBride founded the company in Wichita, Kansas, with "MD" standing for "modular design." Starting with a modest credit union loan and a few pieces of gear rented to local bars, McBride reinvested every dollar earned. He eventually built his own audio equipment, including the T2 loudspeaker, a trapezoidal cabinet overbuilt from Baltic birch plywood and weighing upward of 375 pounds per box.
McBride's ethos was captured in the company's unofficial motto, "You Rock or You Suck." It was a blunt rallying cry for accountability that reminded everyone, regardless of the job, to simply do it right.
In 1990, McBride moved operations to Nashville to better serve his growing client base, which included rising country artist Garth Brooks. Brooks' skyrocketing career drove the company's rapid expansion, requiring ever more gear, staff and warehouse space on Ambrose Avenue.
Clair, then Clair Bros., acquired MD Systems in 1997, and it became Clair Global's Nashville office. The two companies shared a commitment to excellence, and McBride expressed strong confidence in the partnership, citing Clair's consistency and the quality of its team.
After the acquisition, Clair's Nashville office expanded beyond touring into a thriving integration division, designing and installing permanent audio, video and lighting systems for iconic venues. Dan Heins was Garth Brooks' front-of-house mixer for nearly a decade and now serves as the division's regional Vice President. He has led landmark installations at the Ryman Auditorium, the Grand Ole Opry House and The Franklin Theatre, while also serving houses of worship and entertainment projects throughout the Southeast.
Today, McBride owns and operates Blackbird Studio and The Blackbird Academy, where he teaches students the same philosophy that guided MD Systems: attitude is ninety-nine percent of the gig. The legacy of MD Systems also lives on in Nashville, where in 2025 Clair Global joined fellow live entertainment vendors at the Rock Nashville campus, continuing its commitment to supporting artists across Music City.
